Short bio:
Siegfried Rouvrais research interests are in the fields of
software&system modeling and engineering education research and
development. He is currently an
Associate Professor and Engineering Educator at Telecom
Bretagne. Telecom Bretagne is a leading French educational and
research institution (i.e. a selective "Grande
Ecole" engineering school), a CDIO-collaborator, and a founding member of the European
University of Brittany.
Dr.
Siegfried Rouvrais has graduated in Computer Science at the University
of Rennes, France. He obtained his PhD in Software Architecture at the INRIA Laboratory, France
(i.e. French Public National Institute for Research in Computer Science and
Control). At that time, he was also an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at IFSIC and ENSSAT engineering graduate schools.
Engineering
Education
- Engineering education research and development:
- Curriculum reforms, including:
- Design and development of effective engineering courses, programs and curricula (Pedagogy);
- Transforming engineering education systems;
- Coordination and management;
- Learning outcomes, constructive alignment, professional skills & competencies.
- Active and experiential learning models, project-based
learning, technology
enhanced learning;
- Educational frameworks, certifications, and international accreditations;
- Quality assurance in higher education;
- Adult and vocational education
- Development of professional identities, engineering identities, career decision making.
Current Activities:
I am involved in a broad range of courses relating to computer
science and software engineering both at B.Sc. and M.Sc. levels, as
well
as for adult professionals and VET (e.g., Requirements, Software Architecture,
Programming Languages, UML, Business Process Design and Modelling,
Workflow, Enterprise Information Systems).
In connection with these theoretical and practical courses, I
investigate problem- and project-based learning styles aiming at
favoring students' autonomy with a focus on process and reflectivity
(e.g., PBL,
Dewey experiential learning, Mastery learning), both at pedagogical and
engineering levels (e.g., APP
definition, facilitator and tutor trainer).
Since 2003, as program designer, I am particularly involved in integrating such models into
Telecom Bretagne curricula, with a clear emphasis on student's
competency development. I am also attempting to promote the development
of these pedagogical models for Technology-enhanced learning purposes.
I am TelecomBretagne/French representative at CDIO
collaborator's meetings
since several years (participation at Polytechnique Montreal 2010, UTS-SydneyUniv 2010, DTU-Copenhagen 2011,
GTU-Gdansk 2011, NPS Monterey and Stanford 2011). I co-organize the CDIO Fall meeting 2012 at Telecom Bretagne (October).
Ongoing:
- Self-evaluation models for accreditation and quality assurance;
- UBO and UeB trainer on 'Project-based learning' and 'reflexive practice'. Every year since 2005,
- Co-designer and tutor of several Student Engineering Projects and internships training at B.Sc.
and M.Sc. levels, e.g. 2012: 'Program Self-evaluation by teams of students, alignment with ISO-SPICE and CMMI models'.
- Invited talker, e.g. for:
Former Projects and Responsibilities:
- IS Technical Architect A-Z program manager (6 months apprenticeship vocational training program for adults, VET);
- was "UV-Metiers" co-manager [2007-2010]: undergraduate and
postgraduate
sessions on personal development - educational, vocational guidance
and careers counselling; accompanying and developing students'
competencies through tutoring, training sessions, instruments for Human
Resources (e.g. portfolio, assessment centre exercises, psychometric
tests);
- Since 2003, I am largely engaged in the Telecom Bretagne program reforms for introducing Projects (In French);
- Competences for engineers, ENSIETA workshop [quite old now, June 2004];
- LICIP [2003-09]: Collaborative Engineering and
Pedagogical Innovations (Telecom Institute);
- CSCW for engineers (e.g. Web2.0, Forge,
GanttTools);
- INVOCOM [2002-05]: European project on
"Internet-based Vocational Training of Communication Students,
Engineers, and Technicians";
- LEONARDO European Commission's
Lifelong Learning Program with Poland, Finland, Portugal and France;
- In this project, I was ENST Bretagne project manager;
- I was co-coordinator of the M.Sc. Information Systems
program [2007-09];
- I was coordinator of the course semester "Engineering Complex Systems Project " at Telecom Bretagne (see publication
area, 160 students per semester) [2003-05];
- I was course coordinator INF102: "Views on Computer Science"; INF102-Moodle [2004-09]
Research Activities in Software Engineering
Research Interests (please refer to my Publication List):
- Design:
- Large software systems: software
architectures, distributed
software architecture styles (P2P, mobile
code/agents, Client-server *-tiers, SOA), component-based
approaches, service composition, middleware;
- Business processes and Enterprise Architectures;
- Model:
- Modeling and architecting frameworks, alignment;
- Formal approaches, Specification and
Verification: elicitation and
management of non-functional requirements (NFR), behavioral and non functional property (NFP), illities,
NFP-oriented model transformation, metrics for
model comparison.
Current Activities:
My field of research covers
non-functional properties (e.g.,
security,
performance, dependability, scalability) and other quality attributes. Non-functional properties should be tackled as soon as possible in design
rationales, as property dependencies may create inconsistencies.
Ongoing Projects:
- Tool Chains for Service Creation and Verification [2011-] (Telecom Bretagne);
- PASS team [2010-] (Telecom Bretagne & IRISA).
Former Projects:
- Enterprise Architecture for Telecommunications Services [2010-2012] (Telecom Bretagne);
- Model Driven TOOL Interoperability [2009-2011] (Telecom Bretagne);
- QSoftArch [2006-2008]: early Quality analysis of distributed SOFTware
ARCHitectural
styles (Telecom Bretagne).
- CAMA [2004-2009]: Components for Mobile Adaptable
Architectures (Telecom Bretagne);
- SpontNet [2005-2008]: a research program on
SPONTaneous NETworks (Telecom Institute):

in
Mobile Environments (ENST Bretagne);
- C3DS [1998-2000]: a research project on Control
and
Coordination of Complex Distributed Services:

project (with INRIA);
- architectural description language (ADL) and environment
including specification of components, connectors, and runtime
requirements for managing agents, workflows, and reconfigurations;
- ASTER [1995-2000]: Software
Architectures for Distributed Systems (INRIA).
